How We Reduced a Client's Cost Per Lead on Google Ads by 55% in 30 Days
A client came to us running Google Search ads with a decent click-through rate, but their cost per lead had crept up steadily over three months. Their instinct was to increase the daily budget to "push through" the plateau. We took the opposite approach — and brought their cost per lead down by 55% in 30 days without spending more.
## The Real Issue: Campaign Structure, Not Budget
The account had one large campaign with dozens of loosely related keywords stuffed into a handful of ad groups. Google's algorithm was struggling to optimise because it couldn't tell which keywords were actually driving quality leads versus just clicks. This is one of the most common — and most fixable — problems in underperforming Google Ads accounts.
## Step One: Rebuilding Ad Groups Around Intent
We split the single broad campaign into tightly themed ad groups, each built around one specific search intent rather than a mix of loosely related terms. This let us write ad copy and landing pages that matched exactly what the searcher was looking for, which improved Quality Score and lowered cost per click almost immediately.
## Step Two: Cutting Wasted Spend with Negative Keywords
A closer look at the search terms report showed a meaningful chunk of the budget was going toward searches with no real buying intent — informational queries, competitor research, and a few completely unrelated terms. Adding a solid negative keyword list redirected that spend toward searches that were far more likely to convert.
## Step Three: Matching Bidding Strategy to the Actual Goal
The account was running on a generic "maximize clicks" strategy, which is rarely the right choice once a campaign has enough conversion data. We switched to a "maximize conversions" bidding strategy and let Google's algorithm optimise toward actual leads rather than just traffic volume.
## Step Four: Fixing the Landing Page Experience
Ads were sending traffic to a general homepage instead of a dedicated landing page. We built a simple, focused landing page matching each ad group's messaging, with one clear form and a single call to action — no distractions, no unnecessary fields.
## The Result
By day 30, cost per lead was down 55%, and the leads coming through were more relevant to the client's actual sales process. The pattern here is consistent with most Google Ads accounts we've audited: the fix is rarely "spend more" — it's almost always structure, intent-matching, and cutting the parts of the budget that were never going to convert in the first place.
